HMS Unicorn schools competition launched
National treasure, HMS Unicorn, has launched a new art competition for schools, entitled ‘Stories, Myths and Legends’, open to all nursery, primary, secondary, and additional support pupils in the Tayside area.
While the popular Museum and visitor attraction is currently closed to the public undergoing urgent roof repairs, the Unicorn Preservation Society has set a competition for schools to encourage pupils to get their creative juices flowing by creating artworks inspired by stories, myths and legends. The artwork can be created in any medium including painting, drawings, sculpture, collage, pottery, and textiles. The charity responsible for Scotland’s oldest ship is encouraging pupils to be as creative and imaginative as possible.
There are six competition categories including Nurseries, Primary 1 to Primary 3, Primary 4 to Primary 7, Secondary Schools, Additional Support and Group Entries.
The winners of all categories excluding the Group category will have their artwork displayed on-board HMS Unicorn from 17 April until 25 June 2023, will receive an annual family pass, a Unicorn Medal, and a free school workshop on board HMS Unicorn. The winner of the Group category will have their artwork displayed on-board HMS Unicorn, will receive a free ticket to HMS Unicorn, a Unicorn Medal and a free school workshop on board HMS Unicorn. Runner up prizes will also be awarded in all categories for those in second and third place.
Matthew Bellhouse Moran, Museum Director at HMS Unicorn, said: “We’ve run an art competition for schools for a number of years now and we never fail to be impressed by the quality of entries. We’re delighted to be launching a new competition, giving the opportunity for the winners to win free entry to the ship as well as a free workshop for their class to learn more about the rich history and heritage of this well-loved ship. When the ship reopens after the current emergency roof repair work it is undergoing, the artwork will also be displayed for all our many visitors to enjoy when they board the ship.”
