Leadership Changes Announced at the Unicorn Preservation Society
The Unicorn Preservation Society (UPS), custodian of HMS Unicorn, Scotland’s oldest ship in Dundee, and one of the oldest of its type in the world, has announced key changes to its leadership team. Dr Andrew Tibbs has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive, taking over from Matthew Bellhouse Moran who is moving on from his role as Executive Director at this nationally significant maritime heritage organisation.
The appointment, which takes effective 24 February comes at a crucial time as the organisation advances Project Safe Haven, an ambitious multi-million-pound initiative to secure HMS Unicorn’s future. Andrew Tibbs brings significant heritage sector experience to the role, having previously served as a UPS Trustee, and his appointment will further strengthen the delivery of Project Safe Haven.
During the transition period, additional support mechanisms have been established, with key Trustees providing enhanced guidance to ensure continuity in the organisation’s vital work. Dr Tibbs will step back from his trustee duties during his tenure as Interim Chief Executive, thus ensuring full transparency and good governance practice.
Matthew Bellhouse Moran, who will be taking on the role of Executive Director at the Scottish Maritime Museum said: “My time with the Unicorn Preservation Society has been incredibly rewarding. I am proud of what we have achieved together, particularly in establishing Project Safe Haven and strengthening the organisation’s position as a cornerstone of Dundee’s maritime heritage. I leave knowing that the Unicorn’s future is in capable hands.”
Christine Purdy, UPS Chair, commented: “We are immensely grateful to Matthew for his transformative leadership of the Unicorn Preservation Society. His vision and dedication have been instrumental in developing Project Safe Haven and securing the organisation’s future. Under his stewardship, HMS Unicorn has strengthened its position both as a museum and as a vital community asset.”
Dr Andrew Tibbs, incoming Chief Executive (Interim), added: “I am both honoured and excited to take on this role at such a pivotal time for HMS Unicorn, giving the Trustees the support they need to identify the best management structures to develop Project Safe Haven and secure the long-term future of this remarkable ship. I look forward to working with our dedicated team, stakeholders, and supporters to maintain our momentum and build upon the exceptional progress made under Matthew’s leadership.”
